The country of Portugal is split in two by the river Tagus (Tejo) which is the countrys main river. The North of Portugal tends to be the wetter of the two halfs leaving the South of the country warmer and sunnier.
Lisbon during the winter season can be warm although wet and windy with temperatures around 50ºF (on average) and at this time of year it would be adviseable to hire a car to keep yourself warm and dry!
In the spring and summer season, Lisbon becomes the warmest of all capitals in Europe with temperatures often hitting 85ºF or over and almost always sunny. If you plan on doing lots of walking whilst in Lisbon, remember to pack a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen for protection again the UV rays. If hiring a car in Lisbon, make sure that you have air conditioning and carry water at all times.

Spring and Summer time are usually sunny with the temperatures very high during the main summer months of July and August averaging highs in the centre of Portugal between 30°C and 35°C, but sometimes reaching 45°C in the southern interior.
Although Autumn and Winter in Portugal are typically rainy and windy, sunny days are not rare either but the temperatures rarely fall below 5°C with an average usually at 10°C.
Although Portugal is one of the warmest European countires, snow is common on the mountain tops in the North of the country, especially in Serra da Estrela. The climate in Portugal is classified as Atlantic-Mediterranean.
