Further Information on Lisbon
Lisbon, the capital of Portugal since 1147 by a conquest from the Moors, is a legendary city with History going for over 20 centuries. The Alfama district is one of the oldest quarters in Lisbon. Since the majority of it survived the earthquake of 1755, Alfama still retains much of its original layout.
Next door to the Alfama are the old quarters of Mouraria and Castelo, on the slopes of the hill that is overlooked by St. George's Castle. Every year in June, a street party is held in honour of the popular saints.
Within walking distance you will also find The Graça quarter, the churches of São Vicente de Fora and Santa Engrácia. This monumental city is something to see, with its narrow Medieval streets and typically tiled covered building facades
If you don't want to hire a car while you are in Lisbon then you might prefer to arrange a private airport transfer or book a seat on a private shuttle bus.
